Who's who in the classroom

In Australia International students expect local Australians but what they don't expect to find is people of all different skin colours. We explain.

How many International students are at my uni

About 155,000 Koreans enroll in an Australian uni. A lot of Malaysians, Thai, Chinese, Japanese and Indians are all studying in Australia just like you. So it is not surprising to find them in the same tute as you. For example a lot of the business courses will have Chinese and Japanese students where as a lot of the language ones will have local Australians.

A lecture will have about 600 students where as a tute has about 25-30 students in one class. In Business courses you'll find that there are a lot more Chinese and Japanese students some of which are local and others which are International just like you.

Last year alone according to this graph there was about 4865 students in Commerce at Melbourne Uni and about 3665 International students at RMIT studying a business course.

English in a cross cultural setting

At RMIT many Asian students find it difficult to speak English in class. They also find it hard to make friends with the local students. Hence they just speak their own language and make friends with people from their culture.

The local students find it frustrating to work with the Asians who have no knowledge of speaking fluent English. I too when doing group work found it incredibly frustrating to talk to some of the Asian students.

That's part of the reason why there is 1600 exclusions each year.

But at Melbourne Uni everyone is more inclusive of each other. Katherine has a few friends from Melbourne that are International students. Most of the Asians that are at Melbourne have relatively high standards of English and good grades.

A lot of the students stick to their own groups especially at many of the uni events or they go home straight after class. They do not engage in a lot of the university culture which is fundamental in the workplace.
