Orientation host explained

Wanna be an Orientation host in 2014 at your University? Chances are that most if not all universities are recruiting now. But they are recruiting second, third and final year students only.

This is not a paid job but it is one that will teach experience. This is a volunteer job which is recognised by most workplaces and can be put on your CV.  Most workplaces need people to be able to work in teams and communicate effectively. This sort of job will enhance your communication skills as well give you opportunities to work in teams. It is also a good chance to make some new friends. For International students this is a great chance to learn about the Australian workplace culture. This culture is relaxed and laid back. Moreover the Australians talk in slang and this is a perfect opportunity to brush up on your English.

Most Orientation hosts will fill showbags and take new students to a campus tour. They might also have to man the stalls on Orientation day and answer any queries that new students may have. Some may also be giving away fruit and water. You'll get a free t-shirt with your uni's logo which you can keep as a reminder of the fun times.

At the end of the period there is usually some sort a thank you function to thank you for all of your hard work. You'll get a certificate at the end signed by the Vice Chancellor which you can add to your CV.

Does this sound like something you want to do? Then go and apply via your uni's website. Most applications close in the middle of January and then you have to undergo training at your uni in order to volunteer. Hours do vary between unis.
