Buying secondhand furniture is cheaper than buying the real thing.
But most secondhand furniture may fall apart or be old, worn or dirty. And you may not be covered by the Consumer affairs Victoria. Ie you might not be able to get a refund for them if you buy them at a private sale.
You can buy secondhand furniture from the Salvation army and St Vincents or some other charity shops around Melbourne. Most do not include delivery hence you would need a car or a flatmate/friend who can drive you.
Believe me I have tried to carry things on a tram/train/bus in 35C heat and it didn't work as well as I thought. It was a nightmare. It took double the time as well as all the humiliating stares from people on the tram. Not to mention the ignorant people who refused to help me.
I came home to find out that all of my furniture didn't fit in the front door. Ouch!
Another rule of thumb is to measure the front door and the room in which you plan to store your furniture in so that everything fits. Also what would be another good idea is to take pictures of your room so that you can work what looks good in your room.
RMIT Student Union also has free furniture days where you can take whatever desks, chairs, shelves, tables etc that you need. But it is only for RMIT students
