Racism still a big issue for many students

In Melbourne racism is still a big issue. But it is not as big as 2008-2009. In 2010 one student was murdered.

According to a report by the National Union of students, students are being told to go home. It is distressing for many to be told that after spending money to come to Australia for studies.

The Australian Human Rights Commission and Universities Australia in their latest paper (2010) resolved to:

produce a discussion paper from the Racism and the Student Experience Policy Workshop

hold two subsequent workshop sessions to create dialogue between academics and key policy makers on the existing evidence base around international student safety

promote international student safety as a whole of community issue

call for a strategic approach to addressing racism in Australia and the development of a national anti-racism strategy.

Current legislation has also caused some of the racism.  Like working 20 hours per week/40 hours per fortnight has made some employers really horrible towards international students.

Also the fact that International students have to pay full fees have caused some of the racism. Local students only have to pay 1/3 of the fees. Internationals are also not entitled to concession fares on public transport.

But it is said that from next year things will be a lot better for International students. One being public transport will be discounted. But we want better things like access to more affordable housing
