International students in Sydney don't have to pay as much for hospital fees

As part of our Health Guide

Hospitals in Sydney have lowered their fees for International students as much as 30%. That is a good move as it keeps the current students as well as attract more students.

Right economists believe that International Student enrollment has declined by 20% due to the living costs which are rising.

In Melbourne students pay full fare for their visit to the hospital which can be up to 200%-250% more than what the locals pay. International students aren't covered for this (unless in an emergency) on their OHSC.

This is really unfair for many who may need to go to hospital for much needed surgery etc. Surgery fees are about $80000 in a private hospital.

One of Katherine's friends had to go to hospital because of a broken leg. And they had to fork out about $40000 in medical bills. They had OSHC but it only covered her for 50% of the fees. So for that semester they were really worried about their finances and whether they can afford the tuition fee.

One of my friends had food poisoning and had to go hospital. They also weren't covered for OHSC.

Hopefully in due time the State government will lower the cost of going to Hospital in Victoria. This would make everyone happy. If they do more and more International students will be able to afford the treatment that they need
