Here are some good snacks which won't break the bank and that you can easily take to uni or have at home
1) Rice cakes- $1.96 per pack from the supermarket
Low GI and plenty of carbs to keep you going
2) Vegetable crudites (or sticks)
I often like to carry a container of these to eat when I'm at uni. Depending on the vegetables you buy these can be a cheap, but healthy way to snack.
3) Apples
Who can go wrong with these? Best bought in season as they are cheaper then. You can buy it for about $4-$5 a bag and it can last about one to two weeks.
4) Other fruits
You can mix and match with these depending on your mood. But in summer I love berries and watermelon. Cheap if you buy a quarter of a watermelon from the market during the summer, slice and put it in a container for a hot day. In summer you can also buy a punnet of berries for $2-$4 at the Vic market.
5) Cobs popcorn
Cobs is an organic brand and they are featured at Realfoods when they are opened during the semester. But at other times you can buy it from Prahran market or anywhere that sells organic food. The big bags are normally $4-$6 and they can last a while in the pantry (in an airtight container that is)
They come in two flavours- sweet (original) or cheesy. These are gluten free and low gi.
6) Yoghurt
These has heaps of calcium for strong bones and its good to have with fruit. It's better to buy the big tubs (priced around $5-$7 per tub). The smaller packs of 6-8 costs around $5-$6 but they don't last as lon.
7) A really small tub of nuts
I love these. But it is bad to eat them all the time, just in moderation. You can buy a big bag of nuts (about $7-$10 per kg at the market) and store them in an airtight container. Trust me they keep for a while.
8) Baked goods such as a savory muffin or a gluten free cake.
Yummy. You can bake these yourself at home. Just get your flatmates or friends together and have a baking session one afternoon and you'll all walk away with two weeks worth of yummy treats
But of course if you forget to bring some snacks you can also buy them in Realfoods for under $5.
