New International students guide to Melbourne- slang and making friends

So you've been in Australia for a while now and have settled in. Now its time for you to make some friends. So how do you go about that?

One of the successful events run at RMIT to encourage students to make friends

Joining volunteer programs such as the Couch
The International couch is a great way to make new friends. They run four nights a week from 5pm-9pm and occasionally they will have some excursions, usually for free.

At the Couch there are a few team building activities after dinner such as trivia on Australian culture.

Learn Australian Slang
Australian slang is the way in which the locals talk. Learn some Australian slang such as G'day, How's it goin? etc. The way to do that is by watching tv and listening to conversations on the tram and train.

Check out this site for learning some great slang.
Other ways of making friends
Networking is important in terms of professional connections.

Joining on campus clubs and sporting groups is another way to get started. All the on campus groups will be there at O'day and you'll be able to sign up for free or for a discounted price. They are there for all students.
They run many events for their members and it is great way to know everyone.

Sometimes during tutorials you might have to introduce yourselves and therefore you might have a chance to make some new friends

Good luck in making friends. What are your tips and stories? Should International students make the move? Or should the locals?
