The typhoon affecting the South East Asian Countries.

 And how it affects students in Melbourne

Typhoon Haiyan; there were winds of up to 230 km per hour, but now it isn't as strong. Now it is 150 km per hour destroying buildings and trees. In the next few days it is expected to dissapate.

A lot of buildings have been destroyed in the typhoon and about 2000 people are dead. But there are some that alive and that will need food and water and a shelter. There is a lot of looting going on.

There have been evacuations with lots and lots of people leaving the country.

Many of the students in Melbourne are worried about their families and friends back home. Some of them are so stressed that they feel like they might fail their exams. Some universities have fundraisers to help those in need.

Telstra are offering free calls for their customers to the Philippines but there may be some network congestion.

RMIT said that it will not be having any fundraising activities. Rather they will assist students via their counselling service. All universities will do the same, but some will have fundraising activities.

There is a memorial service next Wednesday at RMIT for all the staff and students affected
As for Vietnam many buildings in rural Vietnam are destroyed and many are feared dead.

The Australian government is donating $10 mil package to these countries. The US has also pledged the same amount.

The package comprises:
  • $1 million for the urgent deployment of an Australian medical assistance team;
  • $3 million to Australian non-government organisations for immediate life-saving assistance;
  • $4 million to the United Nations Flash Appeal;
  • $1 million for non-food items such as tarpaulins, sleeping mats, mosquito nets, water containers and health and hygiene kits, a proportion of which have already been released; and
  • $1 million to the Australian Red Cross to assist with their efforts.
