International student safety in Melbourne

" I think Australia is a safe place to study and that no one will attack me", said one student from India.

But the reality is according to CISA is that most students live in high crime areas and work really late shifts at night.

The latest incident was in Western Australia where one student was beaten. He was Japanese and walking home from his bus stop at 6:30pm at night.

A lot of students work at night and some study at night.

In Melbourne students don't have concession so they are often forced to walk home alone late at night. Even if students travel on the train home most students are forced to walk home when they reach the train station. Cars are very expensive to buy and maintain as you have to pay for petrol and parking. Most buses stop around about 10pm and a lot of students work late at night. Hence their safety is in jeopardy.

But the good news is that the City of Melbourne is working hard to campaign for concession cards amongst other things and you can have your say on their site. The other good news is that the government is proposing concession cards in 2015
