The problem with gambling still continues and it gets worse with the number of online gambling sites as well as Crown casino. Many students come here to study only to find that they are lonely and encounter many problems in Melbourne. As a result they turn to gambling as shown in last month's "Life is a gamble" production.
Another student was caught gambling this time in Melbourne's crown casino. This article is featured in the Age.
There is a report done by a Swinburne lecturer. The report focuses on International students and gambling. It also focuses on the pressures of study and finance. There is also a finding that many International have adjustment problems in their first year.
There is limited help on gambling provided by RMIT counseling for students. A lot students turn to gambling because they are lonely and depressed and find it really hard to make friends.
A lot of students gamble online. That too is really dangerous. Recently I went onto Google and typed in Online pokies and there was thousands and thousands of these sites. Some of them offer up to $500 to play for free.
But there is no such thing as free money right?
Earlier this week I talked to another student and they say that they gamble online for their income. They used to gamble until 2 am in the morning. This student is from Bangladesh where there are no casinos. So when they came here they were like "Wow so many casinos! Lets gamble."He had so many adjustment problems in his first year, one being finding friends and money. SO he was like "yeah lets gamble!". But he knows that gambling is a very bad habit and very soon they fell into debt. Now they are looking for a part time job preferably in the city.
Students if there is one thing that this blog has not taught you is about having fun on a low budget. Victorian State Government if you are reading this, it would be a great idea to increase the age limits to 27 years old. Then that way students can be more focussed on studies and less on the casinos.
