RMIT Newintstudents public transport guide

Hey students have you just arrived in Melbourne? Do you need some help deciphering public transport? We are here to help.

1)Reading maps
This is relatively easy.

Melbourne is divided into two zones, but most of the inner suburbs and the city are within zone 1. Most of the maps are at a tram stop particularly in the city.

Or you can use your smart phone and find the GPS. The GPS will tell you where to go. The GPS is free for most phones as it is already installed.

2) MYKI
This is the green card that you can use on Melbourne's trains, trams and buses. All of them except the free city circle requires a MYKI.

You might ask what is MYKI- MYKI is a reusable ticket which just needs a healthy balance (ie some funds) before you can travel.

3)The free tram
The free tram travels around the city daily and its free for everyone. No need to pay- you just simply jump on board

This is the little old brown tram that goes around the city.

4) Trains and trams
Trains run from 5am- 12am. Its the same for trams. For trains you can check out the other post of them.

For trams here's a few things you need to know.
1) Stops- there are two types.
Kerbside- this means that cars have to stop for you to let you get on and off. Some drivers don't like to stop so you should always watch for cars
Island- its right in the middle of the road; usually near the lights
On trams there are no MYKI machines. You have to buy them from 7-11 or a newsagent (with the blue sign showing). You can also buy them from manned train stations.

5) Buses
They don't usually serve the city folk- rather they go to the suburbs aren't reachable by the train stations and they connect to trains.
Most of them stop running around about 10pm at night so you will have to arrange your own way home from the station after that time. At night there usually is one per half hour.
6) Late at night- getting home

Its unfortunate but many students work late at night and don't have a car. If you do have a car you do not need to worry about this option.

Otherwise its best to travel in the first carriage where there are lots of other people.

Don't stay out too late and avoid unnecessary waits by checking the timetable before you go.

Hope this helps you find your way around Melbourne. Have fun exploring our great city.
