One lonely person. We always think black as a lonely, sombre colour. Image courtesy of Google Images
Often International students when they come to university in Australia often find themselves a bit lonely and go through a feeling of Isolation. They often leave their family and friends behind and some of them feel so lonely that their results slip.  Katherine explains how to get rid of the feelings of isolation.

It is important to make friends outside of study and talk to them about your problems. Many students go through the feeling of isolation at one stage or another. Don't neglect your friends and family.
Join a club or society. Student Union has something to interest you.
Don't leave things until it is too late. Seek help early.
Try new foods. you never know what you like until you try it. Very soon your taste buds will get used to this. have a look at some blogs for inspiration.
Explore Melbourne and the rest of Australia.
Is English your second language? If so try and make some local friends and practice your English.
Do you have a TV at home? If so watch lots of Aussie and American programs on the 16 free to air channels.
Volunteer at a local charity and you might make some friends there.
Make sure that you eat three meals a day.
Learn how to cook
Join a sports club
Get fit
Immerse yourself in the local (Australian) culture.

To the parents: I know that you love to put pressure on your kids but try not to in the first year. it adds to their sense of isolation. Too much pressure can result in a fail for some people. Let them talk about their feelings and be there for them. Let them settle in their first your and then put lots of pressure on them afterwards.

But who makes the first move; you or the local students?
You of course back home when you sign up for your uni's MATES program. You fill out the form and then your uni matches you up with a local (or a second year student at that uni). And then it is up to you to keep in touch with them and ask questions.

It also up to you to join uni clubs and immerse yourself in the culture.
