fair trade fortnight

RMIT has a fair trade collective that all students can be a part of. "Fair trade" is defined as selling products at a reasonable and sustainable price and not ripping off their workers. For example Oxfam is a business that makes products from sustainable material. It pays its workers really well. Cadbury is another example, where their chocolate is fair trade. Every year they organise a fair trade fortnight in May to encourage people to think about the people who are working hard to make this product and buy sustainable products. It also encourages RMIT to become a sustainable environment.

Today there was a gold coin donation and bbq to raise money for the projects in Ethiopia and a study tour to Ethiopia. From what I heard it all went well. There were masses of people outside in the line waiting for the sausages. I didn't have one because I was still full from lunch.

The Commune Event on the 18th of may @RMIT Brunswick campus
This was a very social event with lots of free talks on sustainability and lots of stalls. It was enjoyed by many all. The free soup went by pretty quickly and some of the cakes were sold out.
I got to try a pumpkin and lentil soup (free) and a sponge cake ($2.50- all the money goes towards the student fashion shows at the end of the semester).
Students sold clothes and food and got some money from the Student Union for their exhibitions and shows. As an arts or design student you can get a grant from the student union for your final year projects if you need to. Some of the student clubs such as Pedal Pushers came. I got a five dollar bag from the Pedal pushers which included a free two hour Metcard and a road map and some other things.
The band and DJ were really good and many students enjoyed them.
