Public transport

A metro train at Flinders Street station
Its easy taking public transport.  You can save money on parking and petrol as well as save the environment.
There are two ticketing systems.
1) Metcard: Its only $7.60 a day and $4 for two hours (zone 1, for zone 1 and 2 it’s a bit extra). You can travel on any of Melbourne’s public transport (except taxis) without having to pay extra. The government plans on having this phased out by the end of the year

2) Myki: I am on this myself. Whilst there hasn't been any problems for me;  I have heard that there is problems with this card. Don't start using one until it is fully enforced as the Government is trying to fix all the problems with the myki system. You can buy one for $6... but is it worth it??? nope says me.... there's no value to it as you have to add it yourself afterwards. For zone 1 it is $120 for a 30 day pass. I don't know about zone 2 because I don't live there. But a two hour for zone 2 on myki is $2.28.

You can check maps and timetable information on www.ptv.vic.gov.au
There are trains and buses to the countryside. Check out: www.vline.com.au for more information and to check out ticket prices.

Note: that if you do not have a valid ticket, you can be fined up to $176. International students (except for Study Abroad students) are not eligible to get transport concession here in Australia; you must pay full fare (Government rules). The RMIT Student Union is fighting this. Study Abroad students can pick up a form at the HUB, fill it out and pay the $9 concession card fees

I have heard that some ticket inspectors like to bash up people. But most people are really lovely. Victorians what is your experience with ticket inspectors (feel free to post it here- note you must sign up for Google before you can post it here)

International students do you wish you had concession cards? What are your travel experiences? Please tell us below.
