The cheating scandal: the aftermath

You may remember last week's scandal and how $160,000 was earned from writing those essays. We explain the aftermath.

Some of the money that was earned

What happened after Fairfax exposed the scandal?

It got so bad that the Education minister got involved. The government is concerned about this practice as it undermines Australia's reputation. They had a meeting with TESQA on Friday and are still yet to determine the punishment for Yingying Dou.

Universities speak out about this
The Universities finally came out about this issue as it damages their reputations. Many of them were really disappointed.

A lot of them admit students that have poor English in favour of more money. Yes it is true that Australia's budget for university is crippling and that universities need more money to stay afloat. It doesn't mean that quality can go down the drain.

The majority of students work hard to get their degree but it is the minority that ruin it for everyone.

Locals outraged
They want Yingying dou and those students punished for it. Some want them to go back home.

CISA and RNIS speaks out about this
They condemn this practice of getting someone to write their essays for them and the NSW government wrote a charter earlier this year talking about their rights and responsibilities. But the State of Victoria has not done this thing.

There should definitely be more support for International students and much more explanations and warnings during O week. We are concerned that universities are not doing enough to support the widespread cheating problem.

Whilst RMIT has a strong Plagiarism policy, it is hoped that RMIT will change their policies to include the issue of ghost writers which is advertised on Gumtree and everywhere. We also hope that RMIT and other unis change their ways of detecting plagiarism as it is always detected via online systems such as Turnitin which don't pick up the fact that an International student's English is good when in reality they are not and the lecturer knows it.

We support the argument that universities are putting money before quality. International students are under pressure to get good grades when their parents pay a lot of money.
