Grand Designs 2014

RNIS was invited to Grand Designs 2014 by RMIT University.

"Less is always more when designing the interior of your home"

This event took place at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition centre. Based on a British TV show, this exhibition attracted thousands of people. The Admission ticket on the door was $29.50 and it included samples of popcorn, Thomas Chapman chips and water. The ticket also included some of the sessions in the Grand Theatre, Sustainability stage and the Design stage. Participants who wanted to see Kevin McClouds work had to fork out $75-$180 for a special pass and entry fees. Sadly RMIT couldn't afford it.

But I didn't mind standing and watching Kevin McCloud. Kevin McCloud is British and he is a part of the Grand designs live in Britain. This show is popular amongst Australians for the breathtaking architecture in London. Melbourne has the same but its not as breathtaking as this

But sadly there was only one design from RMIT students. NMIT and Whitehorse seemed to fair well with their designs featuring on the wall outside the entrance.

The landscapes were just brilliant and the use of wood in a bathroom was perfect. Also what was perfect is the artworks being sold. It made planning the interior decorations a lot easier for guests as they can get some advice in the ask me section in the middle of the expo.Last years show did not have this.

White backgrounds are in this season. Many of the displays had white walls and stainless steel particularly in the kitchen display area. At the Fisher and Paykel area there was a chance to win $80,000 Kitchen makeover. We entered just for the fun not for the win. Also patrons were treated to garlic buns made in their oven.

In the technology area we watched a great action movie with the surround sounds.

We had heaps of fun sampling and playing the puzzle on the wall. I took under 5 mins to complete the puzzle.

Thomas Dux was there with his wares as were N2 and the usual Bretzel.biz. But new to the Exhibition was the champagne and tapas bar. Yum.

Many thanks RMIT for the invite and I hope to see more of your students works featured in the exhibition.
