Ayam Chef

RNIS was invited by the owner

Ayam Chef is in South Melbourne about five minutes walk from the tram stop on the corner Coventry and St Kilda Roads. There isn't much in terms of a Malaysian/Asian restaurant near St Kilda road so all the office workers come here for their lunch. There is a media office where Channel 7's "Million Dollar Minute" were having auditions so Coventry Road had lots of traffic and there was a bit of foot traffic to that place.

The place is clean and so is their bathrooms. Many a time when I walked into an Asian restaurant it was all dirty. But their bathrooms are clean.
The place is open and inviting.

Ayam Chef is Malaysian and their speciality dish is the Hainan chicken. But I'm always interested to see what sort of veg dishes they do. I'm also interested to try their soups and their chicken soup is a winner. It has virtually no meat in it and it tastes like my mother's soup at home.

I had their Kumquat drink and they put a bit of salt in there to balance out the sweetness of the kumquat. This is their signature drink

sambal sauce which is homemade and not too spicy

The roti was light and fluffy and it didn't need any sauce. It was a little bit sweet.

The noodles were great with the peanut sauce. The tofu was great in there and it was definitely enough for one person.

The sago was a little bit different and you are meant to mix your coconut milk in there, otherwise it is sour on one end and sweet on the other.

St Kilda Road dwellers do come here for your lunch.
