Loneliness and the effects it can have for International students

Loneliness is something that a lot of International students deal with when they first settle into Melbourne.

One of the things about loneliness is that it can have a negative affect on your grades at Uni.
Often the local students are really busy working or waiting for buses, trains etc. So they don't have a lot of time for the International students.

It can also have an effect on your Australian experience here. International students may not have the same social supports as the locals have. It is also exacerbated by the fact that Internationals have to pay full fare for everything including transport.

International students when they first arrive find everything in their everyday lives to be foreign. They don't know who to turn to.

One thing that International students are not used to is our love of Pubs. In the next few weeks we'll try and cover some of the best pubs and partying. This can affect the student's experience of living here. We remembered the days of when we both mentored students in the MATES program when the rule was not take them to the pub. We then later found out that if student were not taken to pub it may affect their experiences in Australia and make them feel more lonely.

Lonely students are also inclined to gamble more to ease the pain.
