Recently there has been a few burglaries in the Dandenong area.
Last year in Feburary, about 5 new Indian students had moved into a place in that area. They had just arrived from India and are starting studies in RMIT.
We caught up with a few of them and here's what they have to say:
"What influenced us to move to Dandenong was the cheap housing. We didn't know much about security or rental rights. We were just new. The housing office at RMIT did nothing much to assist us. They did not tell us which areas were safe and unsafe to live in."
"We moved in and about a month later this is what happened."
" We left the house on Saturday night to go to our late night jobs. We had locked the house properly and made sure that the windows were rolled up".
" By the time we came back the front window was broken and our plasma TV, credit cards, the house kitty and our spare key to the house was stolen, meaning that we had to replace the key".
" We didn't have home and contents insurance so we had to pay everything out of our own pocket. At that time we just started our late night jobs and weren't earning much. We had to rely on parents to wire more money. When we told our parents they were shocked and concerned for us. From now on our parents rang us every night".
" The police did nothing to assist us. At that time there was a police shortage. We told the police but they just wrote a report and came to the house three hours later".
" We tried to find our things but to no avail"
A few more burglaries happened that year too in the same area. In the latest police statistics about 600+ house burglaries occurred in the year of 2011-2012.
So it pays not to live there but to live in more safer areas such as Prahran and Brunswick. The students eventually ended up moving to a lovely place in Brunswick
A lesson to be learned is to have house and contents insurance. If you are renting there is also rental insurance. Never leave the spare key and the kitty by the door. Put it out the back away from would be thieves.
