What to do with a shonky boss

Katherine and I both received complaints from students at the Student union for quite a few years now, so I decided to write this article.
"Shonky" means bad and unworkable. This can apply to both people and things.
A "Shonky" boss is someone who does/doesn't
1) Pull their weight
2) Demands too many things of the newcomer without teaching them
3) Demands a free trial shift. In Australia its illegal and you must be paid for all hours worked.
4) Pays way below the minimum wage
5) Demands too many hours of the student and then the student suffers. In Australia international students can only work up 40 hours a week. For Postgraduate students, if you want to work full time you must only work in the subject in which you are studying.

I along with some other friends all worked in shonky jobs such as 7-11 and Asian stores. Here we were all paid the minimum wage as well as being bullied by the boss. We also had free trial shifts which there are no such things as that.
We tried to tell our bosses that they are cutting corners with our pay but they did not care. Ultimately it didn't go down too well and we were sacked unfairly. I did go to my workers union and in the end with a protest I won back all the money from 7-11. 7-11 were taken to court.

But not many International students are like me. Most of them work similar jobs to me with no pay. Which is not fair.

What to do about this?
1) Check out www.fairwork.gov.au to know what the minimum pay is and to check to see if you are being ripped off.
2) If you think you are try and talk to your boss about this. If he doesn't budge (move) then speak to your union. They can always help if things go wrong.
3) If nothing works and you are still being ripped off then leave. If you are working in a restaurant that underpays, you can warn others on Urbanspoon and Facebook.
4) Join a union and they can help you write a complaint
