Cooking demo @ RUSU realfoods.

I was invited to this class by my friend Lucy who works at Realfoods. RUSU Realfoods is at the end of a long corridor in the caf, next to the pool tables. It is in the city campus.
The class started at 5:30 pm with everyone mingling and buying food. The snack cart was really frantic. About 50 people showed up. Some of the people were from the country. You have to come early to grab a good seat.
At about 6pm the lectures started and about 100 people came. Lucy welcomed everyone. RUSU realfoods is a not for profit organisation run by student volunteers. It is one of the RMIT University student union departments.Lucy introduced the SMART cart. Their aim is to introduce healthy eating to students.
The agenda was introduced here and some housekeeping things.
Lucy introduced the topic on "Feed your mind" and its aims of being healthy during the exam period.
At 6:10pm- The RMIT Singapore Students Association gave a spiel on the durian fest on Sunday at the Queen Victoria Market. Durians are the king of fruits in South East Asia and there are five different varieties. Some people preordered them in advance at the intermission.
6:13pm- Lucy introduced the smoothie which is a mango smoothie. Here it has 20% of daily vitamins and is high in antioxidants. She said that towards the end of the year people get sick due to stress and other things. This year is the biggest mango season ever and you might see a ripe one if you go to the markets. Smoothies are better because they are slow to release energy. You can do a two layered smoothie but all the ingredients need to be completely blended.
Lucy also made the point of when you eat something you want a good experience.
6:25pm- Our first guest chef, Kemi starts. She is from the UK and worked as a chef for 17 years. She also teaches food privately in her own home. She also wrote an e-book called Spring Fling which is a three week diet plan. In the first week you add a green smoothie, 2nd week add a salad and in the 3rd week add raw foods. After three weeks you will feel different. Salads don't have to involve greens and it can last for days.
There were two salads done on the night: a couscous salad and a sweet potato salad. Sweet Potato can be eaten raw. Tried my sushi entree ($3) and liked it. You can make three days of lunch on a Sunday and there are many ways of making things work.
7pm- we had dinner. I had one of the bento boxes ($7.50) which is not very filling. But it is good for people on a diet.
7:10pm- Our second guest chef was Lola who loves healthy foods. She has her own webisode and we all got to see it. She filmed it in Hawaii, where she was inspired by a Hawaiian chef who inspired her to eat healthily. I tasted the brownie ($3.50)and it was great.
7:20pm- Lola demonstrated her Monster balls recipe. Here she recommended that we buy Australian prunes. She put chilli in this. She had a Q and A session and everyone asked her lots of questions.
"You have to listen to your body. You have to mix your diet up. Your body thrives on mixing things up. Don't go on a strict diet. You won't enjoy food so much. Our bodies are amazing!!! Enjoy food! We're human. Its not as stressful as you think." said Lola. And Kemi agreed.
7:50pm- Kemi demoed the last recipe for the night which is another drink recipe with sesame seeds. This is a milk which is the basis for smoothies. This will last for three days. Soy milk is highly processed. The difference between vanilla pods and essence is in their flavour. Vanilla pods is real and flavoursome where as essence is man made.
7:58pm- Prizes of 5 salads and 2 e-books were given out.
8:05pm- Class ended and we all got a goodie bag and a sample of monster balls. In the goodie bags were some pamphlets on places in Melbourne, newintstudents blog pamphlet, Catalyst and a pear. The Catalyst is an old edition of "Sipped and Supped" and it was all about food.
I highly recommend all students attend next years cooking classes as well as Here's the veg attend and try out Realfoods next year.
