On the spot penalty fares to be scrapped

Students as of next year there is no need to worry about the on the spot fines as there is a huge fine overhaul. We explain

In 2017 on the spot penalty fares will be scrapped. The on the spot fare is $75 without a valid ticket but now commuters will be given to explain and most people will be given warnings.

Under the new system commuters will be sent warning letters rather than fines of $223. Regular offenders will still get fined the same amount.

This is in response to many complaints made this year and last year about the MYKI system. There was a review done about this system earlier this year. Many people felt pressured to pay on the spot even if fare evading was not their intention. Many times the machine broke down or there was no way to top up. Many people do not live within a five minute walk to the nearest top up place.

Authorised officers will be given smartphones or tablets and will be able to access the passenger's travel history.

Other changes include the online top up time of 90 minutes instead of 24 hours.
