Weight loss

As part of Bupa's best blog competition for 2015

Ever wondered why you put on weight in your first semester in Melbourne? Well you are not alone.

Many students in their first semester in Melbourne put on lots of weight within months and it is not easy to get rid of. The portion sizes at many cafes in Melbourne are huge compared to what they have back home and some Asian students are not used to having toast and cereal for breakfast. Instead they love rice for breakfast.

Even I struggled with losing weight too in the first few months.

There is no simple way to do this.

Those celebrity diets don't work according to the Better Health Channel. Its better to eat sensibly and exercise every day. But if you need to lose weight it is better to cut down on your portion sizes, ie have a salad for lunch and a little bit less carbs for dinner.

There are a few salad recipes here. But students should consult their universities free health service if they have one to talk about the right diet for them, which should include fruits.

Your vegetable servings should fill half the plate and the carbs should be the size of your fist. Its also a good idea to keep a food diary and keep a track of your eating patterns. There are apps such as calorie counter to help you with this and they are free download from Google play.

The good news for those cafe goers is that there are some paleo cafes in Melbourne which serves no or low carb meals.
