Tsukiji Fish Market

This little shop is in Prahran just a few blocks away from Chapel st.

It isn't a real big Japanese fish market but it is close to it. They do fresh fish and they have lots of that in their grocery store. They also do limited amounts of sushi and its whatever is there.

It is for the health freaks and those that love traditional but affordable Japanese. They don't do ramen but they do udon, okomiyaki, gyoza, takoyaki. And no they don't  do Agedashi tofu.

You can also buy tradition Japanese greengrocers and fresh fish from there.

I loved the service. The Japanese woman was lovely to her customers.  And yes they EFTPOS but its for purchases over $15 as there are huge bank fees that have to be paid and they wanted to save money on those

Primarily I was here for the udon which I read good reviews about it from Fatboo and others online. That and the sushi. I wanted udon on this particular cold day in Melbourne.

The udon was nice- it was smooth and slippery in texture, but its hard to drink the soup without a spoon. I didn't mind the bits of okomiyaki in there, but its much better by itself. Fish would have been great in there.

I loved the sushi especially the spicy tuna sushi. It was sweet, but not overly and it had that mild spicy kick to it. Even non spicy people would like this.

The takoyaki was a little bit disappointing though. It was overcooked and all the balls stuck together. It was a tad bit chewy.

Its a little humble family business and its great to see some of those in Melbourne. It is rare for a family business to do really well for many years and to bring the Japanese culture and foods to Melbourne.

I love these sorts of businesses, they are better than some of the ones in the city which just make money and compromise on quality. To this I'll return any day and try their chilli mussel sushi.

NB: they are not open on Wednesday for lunch
