Volunteering at the Welcome Desk and why you should do it in 2015

Volunteering at the Welcome desk is one of the things you could do in your time in Melbourne. We explain why it is worthwhile
One of your free meals

Volunteering at the desk is a fun way to make friends plus learn new customer skills (or develop yours). Many jobs these days require good communication skills and great personality. In this job you will be working in teams. This is a great way for International students to gain confidence and improve their English.

There is training before the job commences so if you don't know the airport and the duties at the desk, do go to this vital training.

The perks of working there besides the uniform and food is fun and the lovely chance of meeting new international students. At the desk I met lots of new students from China some of which looked confused when trying to find their driver. But when the driver was found they were happy. Most people were happy to work with me.

You also get a Skybus voucher and the Skybus is really quick from Southern Cross station to the airport (20-30 mins via the freeway). The Skybus goes every ten minutes.

At the end of the day you go away with a heart full of love. If you work hard enough and enjoy yourself you might just get a casual job working for the City of Melbourne.

Applications open one to two months before the welcome desk orientation period starts and can be found on the City of Melbourne's website. You do need a Working with Children check and it is free for volunteers. You can download the form from the Working with Children site and then lodge the completed form with ID to your local Australia Post office.

Passport photos are about $10-$20 for a shot of three to four photos but sometimes the Couch or your Student Service centre might do them for a discounted price.
