Student poverty: a growing concern for International students

Student poverty has been a growing concern for some time now according to a Universities Australia report which said that more than 2/3 of local and International students cannot afford to pay all of their fees. The problem is much worse for International students who have no family here and not much means of income.

The Couch sees about 100 students at any time and they try to assist students as much as they can. In 2009 they had about 5-10 per night and now that number has more than quadrupled.

At the Student Union's weekly events this too has always been the same. As I walked along Bowen st at lunchtimes on Wednesdays you can see the whole big line of masses all waiting for their free meals.  Bet you, its probably the same for the other campuses.

As of next year, education will be more expensive yet again thanks to Tony Abbott who is our prime minister.

Socializing is another surprising cause for spending money. Socializing can be very expensive or affordable whichever way you look at it. But what is surprising is that not many students know where to socialize for cheap.

Transport is also very expensive and according to the Australian, the Victorian Government will offer yearly passes as of 2015 which are heavily discounted. But that isn't enough said Meld, who reports that students have to often choose between living in an expensive apartment in the city and not paying for public transport or living in a cheap place far away from uni and pay more for public transport.

If you can please donate to Salvation army or volunteer your time at the Couch.
