Ok... we had earned enough points.
Kumo Izakaya is a small looking underrated bar in Brunswick, but once you get inside it is huge. And busy. We heard that it is quite busy on a Friday and Saturday night so we thought that we would opt for a mid week dinner instead.
It is on the busy Lygon st where 1 and 8 trams service it every few minutes and it only took us about 15 to get there.
At 7pm it was all good, but the service seemed rather slow. It was friendly though and the chef is Japanese or so we found on Urbanspoon. The waitresses were rather friendly.
There was a lot of action at the bar which we had fun watching.
To start off with we had the vegetable chips with the green tea salt. It was $5.80 for a big serve and I am glad that they didn't put a lot of salt into this. Only just a subtle flavour.
I read that Kumo are known for their fusion flavours and this proved to be true when we ordered the chirashi sushi ($7.8) and unagi tempura sushi which was shaped like a lollypop ($12.80). They were really good and I loved how the chirashi sushi came in a bamboo basket. Although it looked small it was rather moreish.
I couldn't go past the miso soup ($4) and the pickled ginger ($2). We are huge fans of that stuff but $2 for such an accompaniment when it is provided freely at the other sushi places when sushi is ordered.
But still we liked it. And we loved the little homemade tofu bits in the soup. Yum
We were full but we had a little room for Japanese dessert which I have read on Urbanspoon that it is quite good. And that is true. We had the green tea cheesecake and it was to die for. It was moist and light and fluffy like a good matcha cake. And we loved the white chocolate cream which was not too fattening.
Rating: 19/20-enjoyed it a lot. Would love to come again to try their noodle dishes and other amazing dishes.
