SOV's Intervarsity games for 2016

SOV is the Singaporean Students Society of Victoria. They have five universities under their wing- Melbourne, Monash Caulfield, Monash Clayton, RMIT and Latrobe. Sign up to any one of their societies to become a member of SOV. Being a member of SOV means that you would get discounts to 22 of their partners such as Gong Cha and PappaRich as well as Mr Loys Puff.

SOV has their Intervarsity Games each year and this year it was $20 for players to enter. Here unlike last year pizza and drinks was included. The organisers knew that there was no cheap food at MSAC (everything is pricey by the way) so they thought to include the pizza as a bargain. I did not know of this until I came back from my lunch break.

Here they day worked out well. First there was netball where the teams were very fericious and they were trying to win the cup. And then the football started with Melbourne Uni being the greatest team.

In the end over $400 worth of prizes was given out and Singapore Association of Monash won the cup.

Singaporean Hawkers Market

Proudly featuring Yeo's products which is their sauces and drinks.

The Singaporean Hawkers Market was on between the 6th and the 9th of April and its aim was to bring a taste of Singapore to Melboune for all. There are many Singaporean students in Melbourne and this brought them a taste of home.

We paid $15 to attend this event at Rendezvous Hotel. Here it included one of Yeo's drinks and two dishes. You can choose two out of any five. Any more and you'll need to pay. The baba cha (Singapore soy dessert) was $5 extra.

There were quite a few people by the time I arrived.

You collect your drinks at the Travellers bar. From there you can select a can or one of their mocktails. I chose the watermelon mocktail to go with my chicken satay and my bee hoon. I could have chosen a milky drink but I heard that they were bad for you around your monthly periods.

I really loved the chicken satay. It was cooked well. Here it went well with the salad and I really liked too much of the peanut sauce.

So for the second one which is the bee hoon I decided not to have sauce. They put too much noodles in mine and not a lot of vegetables. But I still liked the al dente noodles and the vegetables were fresh which is good.

Event review: Singapura

Singapura was a one day event celebrating Singaporean culture in Melbourne. This was a carnival style where everyone (well almost everyone, pun intended) enjoyed the games. More importantly enjoyed celebrating Singaporean culture through dance, song and of course durian eating.

When I came at 5:30pm I expected lots and lots of rides and balloons. Not the case here. Instead there were lots of people and childrens activities and games here. Quiet things I mean and lots of song and dance.

I did enjoy all the samples on offer such as coffee. Who doesn't like coffee? And Dollee biscuits. At 7pm at night some of the stalls had sold out. Stalls on offer were Dollee, Mamk, Roti Road, Killiney koptiam, Tastygate and a few others.

I bought my fishcake from Australian Malay Foundation for a mere $2

I also had my nasi lemak from Tastygate without the meat for $4 and it was huge. Here I enjoyed the sambal on offer and there was lots of heat.

Last but not least was Killiney Kopitiam. There were such huge lines for this that I considered just pushing and not caring. I was going to go for the carrot cake for $5 but it was all sold out.

Singaporean students pay a great tribute

Students take the time to grieve for the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew

Mr Lee Kuan Yew died at the age of 91, a peaceful death. He was the founding father of Singapore (a nation). He was very popular as a leader in the 1960s and 1970s.

He built Singapore as to what it is today. Singapore used to be a sleepy country but now it is an independent.

Many will remember him as a good politician who has a lot of freedom in what he says. He was hailed a " a visionary" by Barrack Obama and remembered fondly by Mr Abbott. Indonesians also pay respect to this great man and close friend of Indonesia.

In Melbourne Meld did a really good story on him, AFIS and the Singaporean students society have paid tribute to him by changing their logo to black or grey. They also posted a short note in rememberance. The students society moved their Makan event to the 30th of April in respect.  There is a tribute page on Facebook and there is a book in Canberra and Melbourne

On the same day as the Lord Mayors event there will be a funeral in Melbourne
