Hyakumi

Myakumi is a Japanese place in Niddrie. On this particular Saturday Niddrie was busy and Friend A wanted to catch up. Hyakumi is right next to La Porchetta which seemed quiet. Here Hyakumi was busy with Caucasians. This must be a good sign, am I right?

Nope I was wrong. The place seemed understaffed for a busy Saturday. We did have a long wait of up to 20 minutes for a basic but deluxe bento to come ($18.80 for a measly one with no rice). It was nice of them to warn us about the rice but they could have made this up with more sushi and sashimi.

The katsu was nice but there could have been more.

There were four morsels of sushi- not enough for someone who is really hungry. There were two rolls and two nigiri. All of which are fresh and my roll fell apart. The wasabi was the lovely Japanese one.

The seaweed salad was ok though and I loved the salad under the katsu. That had that nice tang to it.

The spring roll was the frozen sort.

I really did like the tempura and would order that again even on its own along with the agedashi tofu which someone had

In short don't bother with the bento. Instead order the other dishes which seemed to be better

Sakura Kaiten Sushi II

This place is the sister of Sakura Kaiten sushi in Collins st. This place was recommended to me by aadancefit. He had been there some time ago and loved the fast moving car. They have this sort of thing in Japan.

By 2:30pm the place was busy with all the people loving a late lunch such as myself.

Here their tamago nigiri was overpriced. It was $4.80, other places charge $2.80 per plate. Here the egg was good and sweet but the rice fell apart.

Tamago sushi

Cooked tuna sushi

The tempura sushi was nothing much to write about. In fact I wouldn't recommend it.

But the seafood udon ($3.80 (a winter special), normally it is $6.80) which took a while to come was really great. Everything was piping hot and the noodles was fresh. In fact all the sushi and meals were made by a team of Japanese chefs.

The second time around at 3pm the place was dead quiet. This time I tried the vegetarian spring rolls, the prawn balls, agedashi tofu and the eel sushi. The eel sushi fell apart but the agedashi tofu was really good. It was ordered straight off the iPad screen. This fared much better than the one at Chadstone.

The prawn balls and the vegetarian spring rolls were cold. They had been on the train for a while so they lost their crunch.

The tuna one though was freshly made and it had some huge spicy kicks to it. I loved it.

By the way if you order 5 dishes off the iPad menu then you might win a free ice cream.

14/20- aa_dancefit it was just alright. Not the best, hump.

Sushi Jiro

Sushi trains are becoming more the norm these days and so is anti social lonely dining. More and more people don't have the time for their friends neverless they only have half an hour to an houur's lunchbreak and people do take them late.

The place is small and very crowded at the busiest of times. More so they do not have a bathroom. You have to use the one in the food court they tell me, which is closed after 7pm. But the other one is outside of Big W and is a far walk.

The place is in place of the old newsagency outside of the train station. Oh and they do have water for their patrons but its a bit of an ask from them.

The sauv blanc was a bit strong for my liking. Here they do have sushi on the train but it is very expensive and not worth the price tag. Here I had the tamago sushi and it all fell apart. The prawn nigiri was just ok.

You can order hot food off them and it comes soon after. All of it is freshly made.  Here I had the udon and the agedashi tofu. The udon was great and was piping hot. The noodles were silky smooth which is what you would look for in a Japanese udon dish.

The Agedashi tofu was alright but no moving bonito flakes- sad.

Rating: 13/20- have to agree with Sweet and Sour fork. It was just ok. Nothing more.

Yo Yo Sushi

As part of Bupa's best blog competition for 2015

Yo Yo Sushi is a small store in South Melbourne Market. They are next to Clement coffee stall. Here they sell not only sushi, but cheap Japanese meals such as Okomiyaki for $4 and the Japanese don. LATS is currently closed for renovation.
This is what the store looked like at 1pm

At 1pm, they were out of most sushi. This is how popular they are compared to LATS. Loved the freshness of it all. Each roll was $2.50 and I got two rolls. Although the presentation was not great the sushi tasted great.

Come to Yoyo sushi at the market for your health fix and do support the local farmers by shopping at the market rather than the shopping centre.
