Lucky Chan

Lucky Chan is in Crown and it has been there for a long time. When RNIS last went there a few years back, the place and the service was shocking. Moreso the food was very bad and expensive. These days it still is expensive at $8-$12 a plate but for some of dishes they were big, such as the Congee and the roast duck.

But then the service wasn't very friendly by some of the staff especially the older guy who sat me down. And the lady who asked me for tea asked in Cantonese. These days most people speak English so it is better to ask in English.

First up was the sticky rice. I really enjoyed this espceially the lapchong sausage as that was really sweet. It does have prawns inside. At $10.50 per plate of this, it was really steep and I won't be getting this again.

The char siu bao was too sweet for my liking. There was so much sugar in there which killed the dish. My flatmate can make better ones at home.

The spring rolls were nothing much to wrtie home about. They were bland and very oily.

I did however like the steamed dumplings and the wontons. For the steamed dumplings the skin was translucent and the broth came out of them. The wontons were crispy and not too salty.

Overall I wasn't too happy about paying the $57. If only they had accepted the gift card that would be fine and dandy.

The Waiting Room

The Waiting Room is in Crown and its one of the best places to have tea. I really love the hotel tea rooms as they are so nice and spacious.

Here I had their green tea which is quite nice as well as their complimentary peanuts. The tea comes in a cup but if you want more water you can just ask the staff for a refill. One time they brought out the wrong tea for me. I wanted a green tea but instead got a peppermint. When I gently reminded the waitress she was very apologetic.

Here the waitstaff are lovely and attentive to be with. They clear your plates when you are done. The nuts were really quite nice and very addictive. The plate also comes with wasabi peas and prawn crackers. All were outstanding.

But their cakes are worth the  high $9 price tag and worth the rave from other foodies. Here I had their raspberry cake and it was seriously that good. It was not too sweet and very moist.

Mid Autumn festival at Crown

RNIS was invited to visit the Mid Autumn festival by Leandro, but they paid for all of their own food. Leandro was a volunteer there and he volunteered at the info booth. He was happy being there and getting the free food as he always is.

As for RNIS, we didn't mind paying. However we minded the crowds as the space was too small for a huge crowd. Perhaps like the Flavour exchange they could charge an entry fee for this and then you'll get some tokens to spend on food and stuff. We spent $26 in total on food. As for drinks we had our own water bottle

Some of the Asian drinks are too sweet for our liking.

To start off with we had the BBQ pork bao (2 for $6). It was not too bad and the buns were big and fluffy.

Then we went to Mabrown and got a roti for $4. This was nice and fluffy and I remembered that Gastrology said a lot of good things about this place so we would like to give them a go. But they are only open for dinner on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.

Then we joined in the fun on stage and played a memory game where we had to remember the sauces and the order in which they went. We did not go home empty handed; we won a goodie bag full of sauce, noodles, chopsticks and drinks all thanks to Yeos.

We also took a break and took a look at the kids table. The lanterns were expensive to make and inconvenient for us to take home. They were $15 but the money goes to charity.

The last thing that we bought was noodles from YES Taiwanese food. The noodles had waaay too much msg in it. But the good news is that everything there is vegetarian. Oh and we did like the sweet potato fries that we sampled. It was waaaay good.

We then received a complimentary cookie like everyone else to end the night on a sweet note.

Do come to next years one as it is set to be bigger and better than ever.
