Busking for fun

Students want to make an extra buck or two during the holidays for fun? Well busking might be the answer.

Busking looks easy doesn't it?

Well its not. You have to do all the paperwork beforehand and then you'll need lots of practice to be a good busker.

Well there are legal requirements and you'll have to get a permit. Permits are around $10-$50 depending on where you busk. You'll have to apply through the City of Melbourne's site.

Usually on Friday and Saturday nights it is busy in the city. There is a downside to this: safety. You always have to be careful of your surroundings and its a great idea to go in a group rather than by yourself. Sometimes there are unsavoury characters around about after 9pm.

When you get your permit you can only busk in areas that are permitted. To be a good busker you must check your sound before you perform.

You could also be a balloon artist, but you need to be really good in making animals and not be squeamish around balloons and loud noises. During the daytime and on the school holidays there are a lot of kids. Weekends too a lot of kids hang around the city with their parents. Many of the buskers charge somewhere between $5- $10 per creation.

Do it as a hobby not as a way to earn lots of money. For each session buskers get around $50-$100.  Make sure that you busk in a prominent place such as outside of a shopping centre.
