Last week it is announced that there will be more budget cuts for students and the needy by the Abbott governmment. At the last election Tony Abbott was voted in because he promised to look after everyone. A few months down the track he decided to cut spending on many essential services like education.
It will mean that by 2015 students will suffer the effects of
* Higher costs of education but lesser quality of education. Most International students will look for somewhere cheaper to study in like America. Already International students are paying 3X more money and in the end Australia will lose out to other countries like Great Britain and America.
Also the removal of the caps on university fees means that unis can set their own fees. The fees are yet to be decided by the unis themselves. By 2016 unis will charge their own fees. There is a slash in university funding by the government.
* Higher rental prices- the cost of land and housing will go up. Some students will become homeless as students work in low paid sectors to try and make ends meet.
* More medical costs on top of students OHSC cover- students will have to pay $7 per GP visit and more money for prescriptions. That will mean that many students will be left out in the cold.
But even if students don't suffer all of these effects, it might mean an increase of people begging for money or an increase in street violence and crime which some students may be involved in.
There was a rally in Melbourne on the 21st of May where a lot of people came. There will be many more to come.
If the cuts were to go ahead everything would be more expensive and almost all International students along with the local counterparts will suffer in one way or another. But Labour wants Tony Abbott to rethink his strategies. The team agrees. Already some things like healthcare is too expensive. Travel too is expensive on a day to day basis (myki money only). Most students have passes.
Mr Abbott please rethink your strategy.
Current International students what do you think about these cost cutting measures?
