World HIV/ AIDS day and why this day is important

It is surprising how many students don't know about this disease. Many first year students have unprotected sex which can lead to this. We explain why this day is important.

HIV is a sexually transmitted disease that can make you ill.  You can prevent this disease by wearing a condom when you have sex. These are free at most unis. The symptoms might not appear until a few years later, but when they do you'll experience a flu, fatigue and mouth ulcers.

The Better Health Channel has more about this.

The week before, I had the chance to attend a barbeque at North Richmond's health centre. It was free to promote World AIDS/HIV day. It was here that I picked up some badges as well as free sausages. The BBQ was run by Red Aware, an organisation which promotes safe sex in Australia.

Each year MELD has a section on Sex and how important it is to protect yourself.

There is no cure for HIV. Instead your doctors gives you antibiotics to help treat the HIV. If it is left untreated you could get AIDS (Auto Immune Deficiency Syndrome) and could die from it.

In a year alone about 1.6 million people die from the disease.

Red Aware has lots of information about this disease and how to prevent it from happening to you. Do check out their site. International students are not covered for unplanned pregnancies and sexual diseases.
