Student Organisations and what you need to know.

Student organizations are vital to university life. But some of them can be a scam like the Master Shang case where he offered students illegal discount cards and asked for student's passport and bank details.

All student organizations don't ask for bank account details or your passport details. Most of them just simply need a name, course, uni, email and phone number.

1) The Student Union
Each campus has their own student organization which are a separate entity from the Uni.They are there for you when you need it. Not only do they organize activities for students but they also advocate on behalf of students whenever you are in trouble.

They have about 22-23 student reps (the people that represent students) and one president. About 8-10 of these are campus representatives depending on the size of the campus.

The Presidents job is to oversee the Union and make sure that it runs smoothly.

2) AFIS
AFIS (Australian Federation of International students)  is a not for profit which was established in 2002. I only just discovered it early this year. They have done an amazing job of organizing activities and events and even helping out at the Couch.

AFIS currently reside in Melbourne and they run on a volunteer basis.

3) CISA
They are the major body for International students in Australia. Here they fight for your interests such as accomodation, welfare, education, travel concessions etc.  They work alongside AFIS.

THey have just won an award for the best advocacy service. They also the International students conference which happens every year in the middle of the year.

4) CAPA and NUS.

They also advocate on behalf of students not just International students, but local students as well.

CAPA is the Australian Postgraduate association which advocates on behalf of Postgraduate students. Like the other assocations they also have many events and conferences for Postgraduate students.

There are also other groups within some of the campuses that are for International students such as MUOSS (Melbourne Uni Overseas Student Service) and the Monash International Student Service.

Meld Magazine has conducted a survey about how many International students know about their association and you can read it here.
