" I was homeless for a year" International student tells their tale

Student x (who doesn't want to be named) was homeless for a year. Student X is in his final year this year doing Journalism at RMIT.

But it was last year when he was homeless. At the beginning of last year he lost his job working in McDonalds. He also lost all of his funds from Mum and Dad as the factory in China had burnt down leaving him with no money.

Eventually when he could not pay rent he was kicked out of his house.
He could only afford his tuition and his food. Many times he went to the Couch for their free meals as sometimes he couldn't afford food.

His homelessness has meant that his grades had suffered. He slept very rough in the streets or at his friend's houses.

Sometimes he had not eaten for days.

As for the transport to uni he fare evaded quite a bit on the trams as he could not afford to pay for the expensive tickets. He worried about being caught by the inspector.

He worked in a Chinese restaurant and as you know these waiters are only paid $9 an hour. He was a casual. This restaurant often forgot to pay him for weeks. Or they paid him "cash in hand". Sometimes he would go out on the street at night and beg/busk for money.

In the middle of last year he lived in a squat until he got his life back together. He missed his mum and dad so much. He quit his job at the Chinese restaurant and worked as a part time administrator. He then found housing in Brunswick.

In the middle of last year he was also put "at risk" by the University for his bad results due to his homelessness.

The question I have to ask is: What has RMIT done to curb homelessness? What will the state Government do to curb this problem so that Melbourne is more affordable for International students.

Homelessness is on the rise as many students struggle to afford rent and food due to their meangre  wages.

International students make sure that you have enough money before you decide to come to Australia for your living expenses as well as tuition.
