There are about 500,000 international students all studying in Australia. I didn't get a chance to go to the CISA conference in Sydney but I know someone who did and that was Meld.
We have also been to the play" Life is gamble" and the alcohol drinking workshops. Thus this has given us some insights into some of the problems that are faced by students.
This semester we have done some research into the welfare of International students and we found that many of them miss home so we have decided to put an "At home and abroad" series consisting of many places in and around Melbourne which has many things that reminds them of home.
We also found out that not many students have a lot of money. Through many hours spent on research we found out that many students earn as little as $9 an hour. That said we hope that the government allows International students to have concession cards in Victoria. That also gave us the idea of healthy lunchbox week.
In the coming months we hope that RMIT and other unis can be more proactive in offering students assistance rather than taking all of their money and not delivering. That is partially why RMIT is ranked at 246 in the world. Dear RMIT, we also hope that you be a little bit more understanding about student issues and welfare rather than developing these overarching policies which makes sense to no one. We also hope that the rate of exclusions per year decreases as RMIT currently excludes 1600 students a year.
Change is easy to come about provided that many students both local and International support the idea for change and sign many petitions such as the one on Concession cards. The media is doing a great job on reporting these issues.
