Rice Paper Vietnamese

RNIS was invited to Rice Paper Vietnamese by Meld Magazine (in the form of vouchers) and did not have to pay

Rice Paper Vietnamese is a place on Swanston st where all the student eateries are. Here they are always busy with the students alike. In the three years after my first visit things have changed in terms of the atmosphere and the sizing of the food.

Things have also changed in terms of the pricing. The food used to be a lot more expensive, now it is more reasonable. The food is also bigger in portion.

There are quite a few uni students working in there tonight along with a trainee. I hope that they are getting paid properly as these sorts of places can underpay students by about $15 per hour.

The one thing which has not changed is the rice paper rolls which are priced at $2.90. Personally I think they are a lot worse. In fact my prawn one was dry and broken. After all it had been sitting in the fridge for a while. There is a complimentary sauce with the rice paper roll and I chose mine to be satay not knowing that it was not the normal nuoc nam sauce but the curry style satay sauce for the meats. It is unsual for a restaurant not to serve nuoc nam sauce with rice paper rolls.

But I really did enjoy the sugar cane prawn with vermicelli ($11 for a big bowl). Normally the vermicelli salad with spring rolls or tofu can be quite bland but this was nice. The sugar cane prawn gave that dish a sweet edge. And there was the right amount of pickled carrots in there too which is nice for a change.

Rating: 14/20- I'd come back for the sugar cane anyday but not to takeaway as that does cost an extra $0.50. Thanks Meld for the invite
