AFIS (Australian Federation of International students) ran a highly successful Volunteering Information session at the Couch last night. About 100 students came to this session and we took away a lot.
There was free food on offer but I had other plans.
One of the main things we took away was some of the key points in Danny Ong's speech. Danny Ong works with International students in Monash University and he has given many inspirational talks to students over the past years.
Volunteering is a positive experience. It is one where you can make lots of friends and for some you can practice your English. Volunteering shows that you can be relied on and can work in a team enviroment at work. Nowadays many employers are looking for this attribute.
Some of the volunteers got promoted to a paid position after a while, especially within universities. Many universities often don't offer permanent jobs, unless you have worked there for while.
One of Danny's favourite questions is "How many of you actually know......?"
AFIS is a not for profit organisation that assists International students to meet with local students. Each semester they have their Info day and the next one is on the 14th of September.
Then it was Meld Magazine's turn. Here we heard about some business and media Internships that are on offer. There are many volunteering options and you can suggest some articles to them.
To finish off the night it was the City of Melbourne's turn. Sharon from the City of Melbourne talked about how Melbourne is such a fun place to work in.
Each year for the Lord Mayors and Airport Welcome desk they have about 150 new volunteers. The Lord Mayors event is in March and August.
Many thanks to AFIS for this event and without you guys Melbourne would be such a different place... more like a lonely place to live in.
