Safe sex and what you need to know

As part of Bupa's best blog competition for 2015

Students having safe sex is important as unplanned pregnancies is not not covered by your Overseas student cover. Here we talk about such stuff.

Every year some students get pregnant and then have to go to hospital. They also have to foot the bill for this. The pregnancy may also affect your visa as you may have many days to recover.

Communication
Communication with your partner is very important. You and your partner must have consent to have sex. You also need to talk about the protection as well as many sexual diseases can occur.

You can always say no at any time if you don't feel comfortable by suggesting to do something else or just saying a flat out no. It is your body.
Most people like to use a condom but there are other forms such as lube and dams.

Yeah Red Aware has many workshops on these and they are run for free.

Diseases

There are a few types and some of them are not detected until it is too late. The most common ones are Clamidya, HIV, AIDS and Gonorrhea. HIV is in two types: a cold sore or internal. Most of them have no symptoms and are easy to treat when detected.

How do I protect myself from these diseases?
One of them is to wear a condom which is easy to put on provided that you don't break it. You have to be very careful when opening it as it is prone to rip. There are free condoms in uni; you just have to ask your student union about where to get these. They are usually located in the queer and womyns lounge.

Another way is a dam and Yeah Aware has some useful info about putting the dam on
