Students are you always curious to find out who is in your class? We talk about how many students are in each type of class in uni.
In a lecture it is about 300-600 students depending on how big the subject is. The business subjects have about 600 students in the lecture.
Most of the students are from an Asian background. When many students come to Melbourne they hoped that it would be white Australian students in their class. But this is not the case.
At RMIT about 30 per cent of enrollments in 2014 were International students. In Melbourne Uni it is the same. RMIT is a global university and the interactions between domestic and International students is common. In the student union there is lots of interaction.
But sadly that does not happen much outside of tutorials and lectures.
RNIS is always happy to make friends with International students provided that they speak good English and learn our culture. But sometimes for local students it is hard for them to work with International students whose English is so bad. We need good English to be able approach external companies for a job.
In tutorials/laboratories, the class size is a lot smaller and a lot of the focus is on discussing issues within the subjects. It is ok for you to talk about what you think of the subject. It is also ok to ask questions in the tute.
We must make each other to feel welcome and there is a Beyond Welcome dinner on the 28th of February in Melbourne uni in which everyone is welcome to attend.
