Students have often asked us these questions: What is uni like in Australia? What is the expectations of me as a Uni student? We explain the answer
Many International students come from China and other Asian countries where ROTE learning (memorization) is the norm. In Australia it is not the norm. In fact students are expected to learn by understanding and question things if they do not understand.
In Australia it is ok to ask questions as no question is too dumb or too stupid.
Consultation of lecturers and tutors
In the first week the lecturers and tutors will introduce and how you can contact them. Most of them will have a staff email which is used at uni. They will also tell you their consultation hours and when they are free. Most lecturers would have a set consultation period each week where students can go to see them in their offices. You usually have to make an appointment to see them
Lectures and tutorials
In a lecture you can expect about 300-600 students most of which are local students. The tutorial sizes are smaller, around about 20-40 students per class.
In lectures the lecturer just goes over the key points and you are expected to take your own notes. In tutorials it is a discussion and you are expected to take part.
Most classes are compulsory as they will assist students to pass the course. At RMIT if students miss one or two classes there are recordings for them to listen to at home.
Coursework
Each week students should have a set amount of hours devoted to coursework. Students are expected to have good time management skills. This is about roughly 6 hours per week devoted to coursework. You will have lots of readings to do before each lecture.
You should also prepare some questions for the tutorial and anything you don't understand you can ask in the tutorial
Doing research
For every assignment students are expected to do research. The library has free classes at the start of semester on how to do research. Students are expected to utilize the library's database.
In every assignment students are expected to write their papers in their own words. You can however paraphrase and the Learning Skills unit in each uni has their own sessions on this.
