Umaido is a udon, Japanese style place in Box Hill. Here they are mainly a self serve place, but they do have a little bit of table and front counter service. When you finished you return the tray to the counter, just like a US style canteen
The service was alright but the waiter had difficulty understanding English
They specialise in Sanuki style udon but I wasn't in the mood for udon that day.
Here I had their rice with raw egg on top ($5.90) and tempuras of various things ($9). The tempuras was a little bit cold from sitting in the bain marie for a while.
The rice was ok but I did enjoy the seaweed mixed with it. The croquette was great but I didn;t like the Takoyaki which had been sitting in the bain marie for a while. What would be a good idea (and I think Rice Workshop does this) do some cook to order tempura and takoyaki . And then charge customers the extra $1 or $2 at the end.
There were drinks too and the customer chooses from the fridge. Water was free.
Great place for udon in Box Hill. The sad thing is that many people don't know about the place just yet as it has been open for about two months now. What would be a great idea is to have some more of the bloggers around.
I would love to come back and try the udon.
