I was invited by the organizers of emerging festival and Kinfolk to attend this lovely one hour seminar on food writing and ethics.
The session was run by Lauren from Footscray Food blog and it featured Adrian Briones from Food Rehab, Yasmin from Wandering Spice and Kate from Emerging Writers festival.
About 30 of us came to this. The ticket was $15 and it included a lovely sweet and tea or coffee. It also included iced tea.
Here we talked about ethics and starting a blog and our passions. Ourselves we are passionate bloggers who love food and International students issues such as housing etc. We also like to inspire new international students to start a blog and just give writing a go. You don't have to be perfect to begin with. You just need to express your ideas.
But with sponsored posts and invites you can be yourself but you have to put in a disclaimer saying that you were invited. What irrates me and others is that some bloggers get invited to things but they don't say that they were invited.
Another thing that irrates me and others is the use of pictures. Its fine and dandy to use your own, even encouraged. But what's not fine is for someone else to copy your great looking pics and put them on their site without accreditation. Same with ideas. If they are from someone else then they should be credited back to the site.
One question to think about is: If plagiarising in uni is not okay, why would it be ok for me to do it online?
Many thanks to Emerging writers for inviting me and I got a lot of perspective from this. I hope to see you again next year
