Grain Asian Cafe is in Box Hill Centro which is just above the train station. I had wanted to try this place a few times but never got around to this.
Until today.
It had been blogged about a few times by other bloggers such as Spatula, Spoon and Saturday. They are known for their congee which wasn't available that day as it was a breakfast item and I came at lunchtime.
The service was ok. It wasn't great.
It was a cash only place.
Not only do they do dim sums, they also do rice dishes which I'm yet to try. I am a dim sum person at lunchtime
One of my favourite dims sums at any Chinese restaurant is the nai wong bao (custard bun). For $1.70 at Grain Asian Cafe this wasn't bad. This is one of my favourite ones that I like to buy when I'm at Grain Asian Cafe.
I also like the red bean buns which are sweet and are the same size as the nai wong bao. At this place for $1.70 each it wasn't bad.
I had the sticky rice and this one wasn't great. For $5 it was small and the rice for this wasn't right. I can make better at home.It only had one mushroom and one piece of Chinese sausage.
I haven't tried these sticky sponge cakes ($3.20 each) before so I can't really comment. But what I can say is that it was huge and I couldn't finish it all. It was light, moist and airy, everything a cake should be.
Verdict: Would come here again to try out their congee and steamed rice rolls as well as the Chinese donuts. I also wish that the food court would be opened on weeknights like in the city so that people can have dinner there as well as lunch. Its not right that Umaido and Food republik along with other outside places are the only ones open on a weeknight
