Applying for courses in Australia, the process explained

Many International students don't know what to consider when applying for courses in Australia. Most think it is a simple process, but is it really? We explain the considerations that students need to think of when applying.

Some things that prospective students need to consider and do.
You can apply for courses online. Image courtesy of flickr.com

1) Decide on the course. Do your research. Talk to friends that have done the course. Don't just rely on the uni marketing.
You might not enjoy it as much as you thought you would. Changing courses is quite difficult and time consuming in Australia as you have to wait up to six months before you can change.  Do check out the Study in Australia site for all the relevant course and uni info

2) Check the entry requirements for the course. Some university courses have extra requirements such as a folio that needs to be satisfied.
You may want to check with the uni's school.

3) Apply for it- some unis may have application fees, it depends on the Uni. Most unis have an online application process but some smaller ones might still have paper.

4) Wait for the uni to make an offer and when they do accept it. But if you don't get it the first time you can do a VET or TAFE course and then try again later. Most major unis offer TAFE and VET courses. Most also offer Foundation courses to assist International students with their English and understanding the technical requirements for Bachelor and Degree courses.

5) IELTS- these should not be 12 months and older. Most unis accept a band of 6 but you should aim for higher (band 7 or 8) as a lot of assignments will require good English. You need good English to understand the lectures and the readings and be able to participate in the tutorials. You also need good English to get a well paid part time job. If you want to apply for Permanent residency you also need this as well.

6) Evidence of funds.
You should have about $50,000 for the year. This includes tuition and living fees. This is just in case you cannot work. A part time job is hard to find and it is a long process.

7) The visa process- once you got your CoE ( confirmation of enrollment) then you can apply for a visa. Normally this takes about 2-4 weeks for it to be processed.

You can apply through a registered agent or do it yourself.

Good luck and remember if you don't get into the one that you want there are always other alternatives.
