Mr Singh is an Indian student (age 20), who is doing Commerce in a Melbourne uni as reported by the Age. He had been in Melbourne for about a year now.
He was walking with two other friends in Birrarung Marr in the city at 4:15am when the attack happened. About 8-9 people bashed the student and robbed him of his phone. One of his other friends was also attacked. The third one was lucky and had escaped and alerted the police.
Mr Singh is stable but in a coma and he was taken to the Alfred hospital.
Mr Singh wanted to experience the night out with friends as he had never done that. His brother who lived in Melbourne for seven years was shocked about the news and wants the group to be found and arrested for his brothers sake. At the press conference he was tearful.
The Indian community hoped that this is not racial at the time. But a few days later according to the Age it was racial and the teens were a part of a big group called " Kill Your Rivals". This group mainly targets Indians or people with dark skin. The three teens out of the group of eight faced court. The other five are still wanted by police.
Whilst the police say it was opportunistic, we think it was racial. Maybe they were in the wrong place at the wrong time, but still we feel sorry for the guy and his friends. When we heard the news, we were shocked to hear that this is still happening in Melbourne. In 2009 there were a lot of attacks on Indian students in Melbourne and Sydney. But in 2013 Melbourne seemed to be a much safer place until we heard that there has been more violence in the CBD.
Victoria, when will the violence end? When will International students get travel concessions like almost every other state?
What are you doing to help International students be safe in the CBD?
