Discovery Melbourne is a new student hostel in the heart of the city. A lot of students have asked me about where to stay in Melbourne and this is just another great and affordable place to stay. They had just opened for six months now. It is a stone's throw away from Queen Victoria Market. Every Thursday they organize trips to the market.
Inside the place is a buzz and the staff at reception are very down to earth. The staff are all local Melburnians that know lots about travel and international student needs. There are house rules that everyone is expected to follow such as no alcohol in the rooms but they are pretty relaxed about the drinking. Each Sunday they have free movie screenings. Here they are community feel and they have a student bar and cafe. The kitchen is big and you can cook your own meals. Need some ingredients? There is a supermarket directory in which you can check if you are not sure of where the closest supermarket is. They also help you find a job should you need one. This agency can also help you with banking and understanding money. If you work for Discovery Melbourne you are entitled to free food and drink (if you work more than 20 hours a week) and $200 cash back (if you stay and work with them). They have a careers service free of charge.
Check in time is 2pm but you can pay before that and do some exploring.
They also have a little library and a lounge area in which you can watch tv such as the cricket. There are group areas in which you can hang in.
They are now taking bookings for Feburary but they are in their peak season so they will want you to book at least one week ahead. If you stay three nights or more there is free airport pickup. Or otherwise you can take the Skybus from the airport for $17 one way.
They have all day Internet for $5 but you just need to get the card and credit from Reception and like MYKI you buy top up credit. You can also use the WI-FI with the $5 credit and its pretty darn good. They also have free pool until 10pm at the bar Student Uni backpackers
The Security is pretty good as everyone gets a swipe card and you can't access most floors and rooms without it. There is free breakfast for backpackers. At the bar they have $10 jugs on Thursdays during the happy hour. They have RSA courses at the bar. Student Uni Backpackers Student Uni backpackers reside here. Student Uni backpackers are the guys that give you ultimate experience for a great price. They have offices all over the state and most of their things are under $1000. There is free membership.
The guys are very down to earth there. I met up with Tegan who currently works there. She had been working there for two months and already they are starting to see many new faces all wanting trips and tours. In conjunction with Discovery Melbourne they have many packages. One of them is the Australian open package. Another one of them is the Eureka Skydeck one.
The rooms start from $32 a night. Like many places they do have a limit on how long you can stay for. Students if you haven't found a place to stay then this is a good option for temporary accommodation as it is near RMIT Uni. You can just walk there from here.
