Budgeting: hints from local students and RMIT staff

Students do you know how to spend wisely? This week is Spend wisely week hence I bring you some tips from local students and RMIT staff .




"Always keep some money aside for emergencies. About 3/10 of your income should be kept aside for emergencies", Sally

" The little things always add up. Like the coffee you have 4 to 5 times a week outside is about $20 per week". Meld.

"Make your own healthy lunches and it could save you by $50 per week", Meld.

"Try and live in a share house. It is cheaper than a college room". Indian students

" Buy a MYKI pass rather than money". Metro

"  Mend your own clothes if you can"

" For telephone. I prefer Optus. Why? Because it has many free calls and great internet." Sally.

" Eat breakfast. We have free breakfast for students once a week at each campus." RUSU.

"Buy from the market, rather than the supermarket". RMIT students.

" Plan your finances well. Work out how much you earn in a fortnight and how much you need for the essentials. For example you worked 20 hours a week and you earnt about $10 an hour. That would be $400 that you have earned in a fortnight. Now you need to work out your essentials like rent, food and bills. And of course tuition". RMIT Student Services.
