It is said that there was smoothness with the Business timetable but yet agian there was confusion over the Design and Context timetable this time around. Katherine explains this issue that RMIT seem to have.
Over the past three years RMIT always seems to stuff up particularly with their administration system. Last year alone the Student timetabling system had crashed leaving thousands of students without a timetable for a few days.
The year before that RMIT's enrollment online system went into meltdown as everyone tried to log on all at the same time and on the same day.
Except now it is just the design and social context department where students cannot enrol for classes. They were due to enroll on the morning of July 12 at 8am.
Almost one-and-a-half hours after the STS was meant to go live, Timetabling Manager Nicole Eaton sent out an email to affected students saying “courses that have not been accessible this morning will be available at 1pm today”.
" I'm a student studying the Advanced Diploma of Business (Public Relations) this semester and we got our timetable 2 days before our classes started. I'm now being forced to contemplate whether i can work with my part-time job or leave study because of it" a user said on Facebook
RMIT was supposed to have rolled out a new more streamlined timetabling and enrollment system but no such luck to this date. The NTEU as well as the students at RMIT have been campaigning for a better timetabling system as well as enrollment system for three years.
I have heard talks about 15 staff at RMIT had been made redundant in the last week. The NTEU is concerned about this as more and more pressure has been put upon the remaining staff to do all the admin and their own academic work.
I have also heard talks that there has been a review done in 2011 and if there were to be weekend and last night classes students and staff will have to attend those. Not many students will want to stay back until 9:30pm at night.
Hopefully RMIT will do the right thing and employ more full time staff and iron out all the admin issues. But I don't think it will come anytime soon.
