So You have failed two semesters now? These can be any two semesters according to RMIT policy.
Now the school will email you yet again asking you this time to write a letter within ten working days of the email. The email will sound something like this:
Dear xxx.
Now the school will email you yet again asking you this time to write a letter within ten working days of the email. The email will sound something like this:
Dear xxx.
After reviewing your
results for Semester ( 1 or 2) Student Progress Committee of the School of
Business IT & Logistics has determined that you have made unsatisfactory
progress for a second or subsequent time in your program for one or more of the
following reason/s:
Reason/s Failing 50% or more of enrolled course load in a compulsory academic semesterFailing to comply with conditions prescribed in a academic performance improvement planFailing the same course more than onceProgressing inadequately through a program (Maximum time policy or ECOE program duration requirement)Failing to meet progress requirements prescribed via ESOS or student visa requirement
STEPS ALL STUDENTS MUST TAKE:
In order to be considered for continued enrolment in your program of study, you must now make a satisfactory detailed written submission (with appropriate evidence) to the Student Progress Committee to ‘show cause’ why you should not be excluded from the University for established unacceptable academic progress. Please note that failure to provide a satisfactory detailed submission will mean that a recommendation may be made to cancel your enrolment in your program (i.e., exclusion).
WHAT YOUR SUBMISSION MUST CONTAIN:
If you believe your academic performance has been impaired as a result of specific circumstances, you should state these clearly and in a detailed way in your submission. You must support these statements with valid and relevant documentary evidence which must be in the language of instruction (or be accompanied by a certified translation). You should also provide statements, supported by documentary evidence of any active steps you have taken to improve your academic performance since you were first identified as being ‘at risk’ and what you plan to do if you are permitted to continue in your program.
Helpful hints for preparing your submission are available on the RMIT Website at:
www.rmit.edu.au/students/ acadprogress.
Lodging a timely submission will not guarantee your continued enrolment but it will be considered when deciding whether to allow you to continue in your program.
DEADLINE FOR LODGING YOUR SUBMISSION:
Your show cause submission must be received no later than 10 working days from the date this email was sent. Submissions should be addressed to (xxx-email) Secretary of the Student Progress Committee.
POSSIBLE OUTCOMES:
If the Student Progress Committee believes you have valid submission for continuing in your program a further academic performance improvement plan will be developed.
If you fail to make a timely submission, or your submission does not provide valid and relevant circumstances (as decided by the Student Progress Committee) it may be recommended that your enrolment in your program be cancelled (i.e., you will be excluded from your program).
Where a student is recommended for exclusion the student will be formally advised by the Academic Registrar via email. Students who are excluded have 20 working days from the date the exclusion advice was sent to appeal to the University Appeals Committee. Students must have a current enrolment or be on an approved leave of absence to be eligible to lodge an appeal against an exclusion decision.
Where an excluded student chooses not to appeal to the University Appeals Committee they forfeit their right to an external appeal against their exclusion.
This is a very serious matter and if you have any questions about what is required of you, or believe you have been identified in error you should immediately contact (xxx) Secretary of the Student Progress Committee.
It is recommended that you read the policy and procedures governing academic progress to understand your rights and responsibilities as a student ‘at risk’ - final stage. Go to:www.rmit.edu.au/students/ acadprogress.

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS:
RMIT is required under the ESOS Act (2000) to report to the relevant government authorities, students who have failed to maintain satisfactory academic progress. If your unsatisfactory progress results in the cancellation of your enrolment (exclusion), appropriate notifications will be sent to the government authorities. This notification may lead to cancellation of your student visa. Go to www.rmit.edu.au/students/ acadprogress.
If you cancel/transfer your program before receiving the formal notification of your exclusion from the Academic Registrar (Intention to exclude) the RMIT exclusion process will continue. However, the relevant government authorities will be informed of the voluntary cancellation or the transfer to another program / provider and not the unsatisfactory academic progress.

STUDENTS WHO CHOOSE NOT TO CONTINUE WITH THEIR PROGRAM:
If you have decided not to continue with your program and are currently enrolled you should formally cancel your enrolment prior to the census or relevant withdrawal date to ensure that you will not incur an unwanted fee liability or academic penalty. This will also assist the University to be clear on your enrolment intentions. Go to www.rmit.edu.au/students/ enrolment/cancellation.
Note: the exclusion process may continue even if you cancel your enrolment. This will ensure that you can not apply to enrol into the program from which you have been excluded for a period of 12 months.

Hints:
* Write the letter with as much detail as possible
* Ask the Student Union to help you with this proccess.
* Use RMIT services before you hand your show cause in and get them to also write a letter
* Think about ways to improve for the next semester. Is there something that RMIT can do to help you? Like amend a result or improve a service?
* Remember though that not all "Show causes" are accepted. If you have an unsatisfactory result you can appeal to the University appeals committee within 20 working days
* check your email carefully even though you are on holidays. The University sends mail to your Student email not to your personal email or your mailbox.
